In 2001, BC Hydro published a report called the Green Energy Study of BC in which it stated that the western coast of Vancouver Island had the potential wave power of 8.25GW, some of these possible sites for initialization including Ucluelet and Winter Harbour, each having the potential of 200MW. (Martin BC Sustainable Energy) In the summer of that same year, BC Hydro announced plans for a 20MW green energy plan for Vancouver Island, a majority of which would be wave power. However, in 2003 they pulled out of these projects.
Nevertheless, independent green power projects have taken place since then, including a site at Ucluelet and key locations along the coast of Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands.
